Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh continues to make history in the world of swimming. At just 18 years old, the Olympic star set her second world record in less than 72 hours during the Canadian swimming trials, confirming her dominance across multiple styles and distances. This time, McIntosh broke the 200m individual medley record with a time of 2:05.70, surpassing the mark set by Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu a decade ago.
On Saturday, the young swimmer had already stunned the world by breaking the record in the 400m freestyle. And on Sunday, she kept up the pace by posting the third-fastest time in history in the women’s 800m freestyle. Her stellar performance comes after a successful showing at the Paris Olympic Games, where she won three gold medals and one silver, solidifying her place as one of the leading figures in international swimming.
Unstoppable momentum ahead of the World Championships in Singapore
McIntosh admitted that breaking the 200m individual medley record had been a goal she had in mind for the past two years. “It’s one of those records that’s always been on my mind,” she confessed. “I’ve been thinking about it. I’ve tried to take it step by step,” she added, visibly excited to achieve a milestone that brings her closer to the pinnacle of the sport. This accomplishment, along with her previous record in the 400m individual medley set in 2023, strengthens her reputation as one of the most complete swimmers on the circuit.
For McIntosh, the 200m individual medley is one of her key events. “There’s no room for error, and it’s kind of a sprint test for me,” she explained, highlighting that this victory gives her a big boost of confidence ahead of the upcoming World Championships in Singapore. Her versatility and consistency at the highest level not only make her a favorite in that tournament but also point to a new era in women’s swimming under her leadership.
