Preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games continue, and the selection of the venue for the surfing events is reaching its final stage. The third appearance of surfing in the Summer Olympics will take place much closer to the host city, in contrast to the Paris 2024 Games, which were held 15,700 km away in Teahupo’o, Tahiti. After much speculation, the list of possible locations has been narrowed down to two main contenders.
Fernando Aguerre, President of the International Surfing Association (ISA), stated that Lower Trestles and Huntington Beach are the leading candidates to host the surfing competition at the LA28 Olympics. Both venues have a proven track record of hosting world-class surfing events and are widely regarded as two of the premier surfing destinations in Southern California.
CANDIDATE VENUES
Both Lower Trestles and Huntington Beach have extensive experience hosting major surfing competitions. Huntington Beach has hosted the ISA World Surfing Games in 2022, 2006, 1996, and 1984, as well as the ISA Para Surfing World Championships in 2024 and 2023. Lower Trestles has also hosted numerous international competitions and was the venue for the World Surf League Finals for the fourth time in 2024.
The final decision on the Olympic surfing venue will be made in close collaboration with the LA2028 Organizing Committee, considering the unique characteristics of each location.
