Volleyball, a sport deeply rooted in Philippine culture, remains a passion that unites the nation. From university leagues to professional clubs, the courts are filled with energy and enthusiasm. However, achieving success on the international stage has been a persistent challenge due to fragmented schedules and programs. To address these obstacles, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has intensified its support through its Volleyball Empowerment Program, marking a turning point in the development of Philippine volleyball.
The impact of this support is not only reflected in results but also in the renewed commitment to the national teams. With experienced coaches and tailored strategies, the Philippines is rediscovering its potential and aiming to compete with the best in the world. This collective effort has transformed the aspirations of a nation and provided its athletes with a platform to shine.
STRATEGIES AND RESULTS
The FIVB’s support has been pivotal in addressing structural issues and enhancing the performance of national teams. With the addition of coaches like Italy’s Angiolino Frigoni, the national teams have aligned with international standards, adopting training methods tailored to local needs. This approach has already yielded results: in 2022, the women’s beach volleyball team secured its first international medal at the Beach Pro Tour Futures in Subic. In 2023, both the men’s and women’s teams made notable strides at the Asian Games and the SEA VLeague.
Hosting major events has also fueled the sport’s growth in the Philippines. With the upcoming 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship, the country not only secures a chance to compete on home soil but also benefits from a long-term development program spearheaded by the FIVB. This initiative includes aligning national and international competition calendars, strengthening partnerships, and attracting corporate sponsors, creating a sustainable ecosystem for the growth of Philippine volleyball.
