The International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) has revealed the list of eligible candidates for the elections of the 73rd UIPM Congress, which will be held on November 16-17, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event will mark a historic moment, as the current president, Dr. Klaus Schormann, will step down at the end of this year, making way for new leaders in several key positions within the organization.

There are three candidates for the position of IUPM President: Joel Bouzou (France), Sharif El Erian (Egypt) and Robert Stull (USA). All of them will compete to succeed Schormann and lead the organization into a new era. In addition, there are 12 candidates vying for five vice-president positions, guaranteeing at least two new appointments at this level. New members in the areas of sports, marketing and media will also be elected to the UIPM executive board.

These elections represent a significant milestone, with a record 65 candidates running, surpassing the previous high of 58 reached in 2016. The newly elected leaders will begin their duties in January 2025, with the implementation of new term limits for all elected offices.

FOUNDED IN 1948 AND GROWING EVER SINCE

The UIPM was founded in 1948 with the aim of managing and promoting modern pentathlon, a sport that combines five disciplines: fencing, swimming, equestrian, shooting and running. Modern pentathlon was introduced into the Olympic Games by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, in 1912. Since its creation, the UIPM has worked to adapt and modernize the sport, including the introduction of new disciplines such as laser pentathlon. Today, the UIPM is the world authority for modern pentathlon, organizing international competitions and promoting the development of the sport globally.
