The International Federation of Muaythai Associations has taken a significant step towards its ambitious vision of a global Muay Thai league by appointing Khun Worawi Makudi, the former president of the Football Association of Thailand, to its Advisory Council.
In an official statement, IFMA emphasized that Makudi’s inclusion is a testament to the organization’s commitment to elevating Muay Thai’s status on the international stage. The federation’s goals include securing a stronger presence in the Olympic and continental games, expanding the sport’s global reach, and aligning its efforts with the principles of the Olympic Movement.
WORAWI MAKUDI: A PROVER LEADER
Makudi’s storied career spans decades of leadership and influence in global sports. From 1996 to 2007, he served as the general secretary of FAT before becoming its president, a position he held until 2015. His impact extended far beyond Thailand, as he represented Asia on FIFA’s executive committee for nearly 20 years.
During his tenure with FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, Makudi chaired key committees overseeing futsal, women’s football, and refereeing, contributing significantly to the development of football across Asia. This wealth of experience, coupled with his international reputation, positions him as a valuable addition to IFMA’s leadership at a pivotal moment in the federation’s history.
WORLD MUAY THAI LEAGUE
At the heart of IFMA’s strategic plans is the creation of a global Muay Thai league. This bold initiative aims to professionalize the sport while celebrating its rich cultural heritage, all within the framework of Olympic standards.
Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan, president of IFMA and former governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, has highlighted the importance of strong leadership in achieving this transformative goal. “Khun Worawi Makudi’s international stature and extensive experience bring unparalleled strength to our mission of elevating Muay Thai on the global stage,” he said.
FUTURE OF MUAY THAI
The IFMA Advisory Council plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the federation, with its leadership reflecting the organization’s global vision. Moreover, the presence of Stephan Fox as Secretary General has established a strong connection between IFMA and SportAccord, solidifying the foundation for Muay Thai’s journey toward global recognition.
The council is chaired by His Highness Prince Nawaphansa Yugala, with Khun Somsak Leeswadtrakul serving as Vice-Chair. Other prominent members of the council include HRH Prince Fahad bin Mansour bin Saad bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, Abdullah Saeed Amer Al Neyadi, and Somchart Charoenwacharawit.
OLYMPIC RECOGNITION
IFMA prides itself on being the only Muay Thai organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee and fully compliant with World Anti-Doping Agency standards. This recognition underscores the federation’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and excellence in the sport.
Makudi’s appointment signals a new chapter for IFMA as it works to solidify Muay Thai’s position as a globally celebrated sport. With a global league on the horizon and a leadership team equipped with experience and vision, the federation is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goals.
