The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted provisional recognition to World Boxing (WB) as the International Federation (IF) responsible for governing boxing worldwide within the Olympic Movement. This decision was made during a remote meeting held on February 26, 2025, following a thorough assessment of World Boxing’s situation.

SPORTS CRITERIA MET BY WORLD BOXING

World Boxing has demonstrated compliance with several key sports criteria required for provisional recognition. These include:

  • The affiliation of 78 National Federations from five continents, along with the establishment of four continental confederations.
  • Evidence that 62% of boxers and 58% of boxing medalists at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are affiliated with National Federations that are members of World Boxing.
  • The implementation of sports integrity processes during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, independently overseen by the Paris Boxing Unit.
  • Membership in AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport), approved by the SportAccord Executive Committee and the AIMS General Assembly.

PROGRESS IN GOVERNANCE AND TRANSPARENCY

Regarding governance criteria, World Boxing has established a solid structure and policies to ensure good practices. Key highlights include:

  • The adoption of a Code of Ethics, a Conflict of Interest Policy, and a Finance and Audit Committee with clear terms of reference.
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to improving governance and implementing appropriate standards.
  • Ensuring a revenue-generating process based on multi-year commercial agreements covering the 2025-2028 period.
  • Recognition of the jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
  • Achieving signatory status for the World Anti-Doping Code, accepted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and full implementation of a contract with the International Testing Agency (ITA).

A KEY STEP FOR THE FUTURE OF OLYMPIC BOXING

The IOC concluded that World Boxing has made significant progress in the identified areas to be recommended as the provisionally recognized International Federation within the Olympic Movement. This recognition reinforces World Boxing’s commitment to sports integrity, transparent governance, and compliance with international standards, marking an important step for the future of boxing in the Olympic Games.
