The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken a new step in shaping the identity of Olympism by presenting the first-ever sonic interpretation of the Olympic rings. The initiative transforms one of the most recognizable symbols in world sport into an auditory experience based on something deeply human: the heartbeats of athletes and fans from around the globe. This new sonic signature will begin to be broadcast across the organization’s official channels, gradually becoming part of the digital and audiovisual narrative of the Olympic Movement.
The proposal seeks to translate into sound the collective emotion that surrounds the Olympic Games, an experience shared by millions of people every four years. The sonic signature evokes a heartbeat that visually accompanies the Olympic rings, reinforcing the emotional connection between audiences and the symbol. It made its debut during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, where it began to be integrated into both in-stadium experiences and digital content linked to the event.
A shared heartbeat from athletes and fans
The origin of this sonic identity lies in a simple yet powerful idea: when people experience intense sporting moments together, their emotions tend to synchronize—and with them, the rhythm of their hearts. Inspired by this concept, the IOC recorded hundreds of real heartbeats from members of the Olympic Movement, creating a sound archive that captures the emotional intensity that defines the Games.
Among those who participated in the recordings are Olympic champions from different disciplines and generations, including Abhinav Bindra, Alistair Brownlee, Allyson Felix, Jessica Fox, and Martin Fourcade. Their heartbeats, together with those of fans and members of the Olympic ecosystem, were integrated into a creative process that transformed physiological recordings into a musical composition. Each pulse represents moments of concentration, tension, triumph, and celebration—elements that have historically defined the Olympic experience.
From visual symbol to a sonic identity of Olympism
The different heartbeats collected were used as the raw material to build a unique sonic foundation accompanying the Olympic rings. The result is a kind of living soundtrack that translates the determination, joy, and triumph of sport into a universal rhythm, evoking the human dimension behind every competition, record, and medal.
Beyond its symbolic dimension, the new sonic signature is also part of a broader strategy to strengthen the global recognition of the Olympic brand. Officially introduced during Milano Cortina 2026, the identity is complemented by a renewed digital concept called “The Pulse”, a visual and narrative system built around the idea of a shared rhythm. This initiative includes a motion symbol, an adaptable graphic system, and a tone of voice designed to reflect the collective energy that defines the Olympic Movement.
