The Organizing Committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games has officially announced the dates for this highly anticipated sporting event, marking the beginning of the countdown to one of the most emblematic events in world sport. The opening ceremony of the LA28 Olympic Games will take place on July 14, 2028, extending until July 30. For its part, the Paralympic Games will begin on August 15 and will culminate on August 27.
“The official countdown to the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games begins,” commented Janet Evans this week, five-time Olympic medalist and LA28 athlete director. ”The LA28 Games will be unique, showcasing the best of Southern California’s exceptional stadiums and world-class culture for athletes and fans alike. This milestone makes the Games a reality for every athlete who actively trains to fulfill their LA28 dream and for the fans who follow their journey.”
THIRD TIME FOR LOS ANGELES
This will be the third time Los Angeles has hosted the Olympic Games, having done so in 1932 and 1984, but it will be the first time the city has hosted the Paralympic Games. The LA28 Games will reflect the creativity, diversity and youthful energy that characterizes the Los Angeles region.
“Los Angeles is home to the most incredible competition venues and has state-of-the-art training facilities,” said Ileana Rodriguez, Paralympic swimmer and member of the LA28 Athletes’ Commission. ”The LA28 Games will be an extraordinary experience for every athlete who comes to this city to pursue their dream. This will be the first time Los Angeles has hosted the Paralympic Games, and we have a great opportunity to show the world what is possible for people with disabilities. Southern California is one of the most inclusive and diverse places, and I couldn’t be prouder to help host the world’s best athletes in 2028.”
A SUMMER WITH MORE THAN 15,000 ATHLETES
One of the great strengths of the LA28 Games will be its focus on sustainability, using existing stadiums and sports venues in the region, ensuring an economically responsible event. The Games will feature more than 3,000 hours of live sport, distributed across 800 events in more than 40 sports. Fifteen thousand Olympic and Paralympic athletes are expected to participate.
“Los Angeles is an ambitious city, full of possibilities, and the Games will reflect our community,” said Casey Wasserman, president of LA28. ”Los Angeles will be the perfect setting to host the world’s largest cultural, sports and entertainment event.”
The LA28 Games promise to be a watershed event, highlighting both the city’s Olympic legacy and its commitment to inclusion and diversity, both inside and outside of sport.
