Unexpectedly, one of the most iconic figures in tennis history has surprised everyone with a proposal that could transform the sport. It’s none other than Billie Jean King, a former tennis player who competed for over two decades in WTA tournaments and claimed 12 Grand Slam titles. What exactly is her proposal, and why is it considered revolutionary? We’ll tell you all about it here at Sportsin.biz.

In a video posted on Twitter, the legendary 80-year-old athlete suggested three key changes to the organization of tennis tournaments worldwide: modifying the scoring system, introducing personalized jerseys, and limiting matches to three sets. According to King, these measures aim to modernize and revitalize the “white sport.”

Personalized Jerseys

King proposes that players wear jerseys with their name and number, a strategy to strengthen their personal brands and enhance merchandising opportunities. “Every player should wear their name and a number on their jersey. Why? Because right now, we need to promote our players just like they do in other sports,” she explained.

Modifying the Scoring System

Concerned with attracting new audiences, especially younger ones, King believes it’s necessary to simplify the scoring system to make it more accessible. “I wouldn’t keep the traditional score. I think new fans, especially younger ones, don’t quite understand the 15-40 or 30-15. What I would do is mark the score in a simpler way: 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then, it doesn’t matter what you need to do to win the game at a possible 2-2, whether you need to win by two points or not. What’s clear to me is that I would leave the 30-30 and all that nomenclature behind,” she stated.

Three-Set Matches

The tennis legend also questions the length of matches, noting that two or three-hour matches can become tedious. “Everyone should play the best of three sets, so we can all fight for the same amount of money, both men and women,” she concluded.
