Since its founding four decades ago, the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSA), based in Riyadh, has used sports as a tool to strengthen cooperation among its more than 50 member countries. As part of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), this federation has worked to democratize access to sports and promote inclusive values among nations with diverse cultural and economic realities.

At the end of 2025, Riyadh will host the fifth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games, an event celebrating its 20th anniversary. This multi-sport gathering coincides with the ISSA’s 40th anniversary, reinforcing its commitment to sporting excellence, sustainability, and positive impact on host communities.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE CORE

ISSA Secretary-General Nasser Majali emphasized the importance of designing a sustainable and affordable event for future hosts: “Our goal is to create a positive legacy for the cities that host the Games. Beyond sporting excellence, we aim to promote sustainable policies that benefit all member countries,” he stated.

Saudi Arabia, with its growing expertise in organizing high-profile events, has committed to using these Games as a model to ensure sustainability in international competitions. This approach not only helps reduce costs but also democratizes access to sports, especially in developing nations within the ISSA.

A PLATFORM FOR ATHLETES AND NATIONS

The Islamic Solidarity Games have become a key platform for young athletes to gain experience and for seasoned competitors to assess their readiness during the Olympic cycle. Majali highlighted the Games’ role as a “testing ground” for the Olympics, providing athletes with a stage to measure their skills and plan their sporting futures.

Additionally, the ISSA seeks to support infrastructure development and skills growth in less advanced countries, promoting a cooperative model where more experienced nations assist emerging ones. Saudi Arabia, as the ISSA’s birthplace, leads these efforts, emphasizing its role in advancing inclusive sports policies.

A LEGACY THAT TRANSCENDS

Saudi leadership, spearheaded by Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, has been instrumental in steering the ISSA. With a focus on transparent governance and holistic development, the Kingdom is not only hosting the 2025 Games but also using them as preparation for future events, such as the 2034 Asian Games and the FIFA World Cup.

The celebration of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh promises to be a milestone in the country’s sports history, setting a precedent for sustainable event creation and strengthening cooperation among ISSA nations. This sports festival aims not only for excellence in competition but also to leave a lasting impact on the region and the Islamic world.
