The world of cycling was taken by surprise by the decision of Caleb Ewan, one of the top sprinters of his generation, to retire from professional competition. The 30-year-old Australian, famous for his explosive finishes on flat stages, announced the news through his social media, closing a career of over a decade marked by memorable victories, but also by tough episodes that affected his relationship with the sport.

Despite a promising comeback in 2025 with the Ineos Grenadiers team, where he returned to victory, Ewan admitted that the inner spark that once drove him was no longer the same. His abrupt and conflicted departure from Jayco AlUla, along with a period of injuries and setbacks since 2021, marked a turning point in his career and motivation to continue competing.

From glory in the Grand Tours to an early farewell

Caleb Ewan broke into international cycling with his distinctive low and powerful sprinting style, collecting five stage wins in the Tour de France and five more in the Giro d’Italia. In 2021, aiming to win stages in all three Grand Tours, a crash in the Tour that fractured his collarbone halted his momentum. Although he returned to racing weeks later, he never fully recovered his top form, and his time with Lotto Dstny and Jayco AlUla was marked by instability.

His final stint with Ineos Grenadiers seemed like a redemption story: he won races again and felt competitive. However, as he himself stated, “even when I crossed the finish line first, that feeling faded faster than before.” Realizing that what once fulfilled him no longer did, Ewan chose to retire gratefully and on his own terms, highlighting the support of his family and close circle. Thus, one of the leading figures of Australian cycling over the past decade says goodbye.
