The 2024 edition of the World Triathlon Cup Rome saw over one hundred athletes from all continents, from New Zealand to South Africa. The women’s race, which began at 9:30 and was accompanied by pouring rain, saw the participation of 38 athletes including the Azzurre Carlotta Missaglia, Angelica Prestia, Bianca Seregni, Sharon Spimi, Verena Steinhauser, Costanza Arpinelli, Beatrice Mallozzi and Myral Greco. Three of our girls finished in the top 10: the best performance was that of Steinhauser, fifth with a time of 01.01:11, followed by Costanza Arpinelli (ninth in 01:01:39) and Bianca Seregni (tenth in 01:01:42).

Germany’s Nina Eim, secured her second successive World Cup gold in the Italian capital. Caution was key over the 20km bike, athletes coming off with alarming regularity, but after Eim and the chasers closed the gap on the leaders on lap three, there was something inevitable about the result. Alissa Konig of Switzerland established herself as Eim’s main threat by the midway point of the 5km run, only for the German to pull clear, Belgium’s Jolien Vermeylen hanging tough for an excellent bronze.

Steinhauser’s hot words to ‘RAI’ microphones: “Competing in Italy is always wonderful thanks to the home fans. It’s true that I took part in the Paris Olympics, but Rome has a unique charm. It’s just a shame about the rain today that made the surface slippery, I wanted the podium and I came close”. Seregni said: “It was tough today because of the rain. In swimming I tried to dictate the pace and stay in the leading group. I’m happy, I was a bit scared for the bike fraction and now I’m ready for the last race of the season in Torremolinos”. Arpinelli was very satisfied: “Rome was my best result in the World Cup, competing at home is very exciting and I’m very satisfied”.

THE DECISIVE ATTACK IN THE LAST LAP OF SEGUIN

At 13:00 the men’s competition ended (60 athletes in the race) with the triumph of the Frenchman Yanis Seguin thanks to a decisive attack in the last lap of the race that allowed him to cross the finish line ahead of the Australian Luke Willian and his compatriot Baptiste Passemard.

Excellent performance by the youngsters Euan de Nigro and Pietro Giovannini who, in the leading group after the second bike fraction, finished in ninth and 14th place respectively. Among the other Italians in the race, Azzano 18th and Polikarpenko 35th; Angelini was forced to retire during the cycling fraction.
