With great success and absolute unanimity in all its decisions, the Europe Triathlon (ET) General Assembly was held in Vichy, France. The democratic proceedings and the smooth running of the debates confirm the excellent climate that has been forged in the ET and which is attributed to the current administration and its President, Renato Bertrandi. The focus of the GA was on the presentations of the candidates to succeed the very successful World Triathlon (WT) President, Marisol Casado.
Casado ends her term as WT President with great success, leaving a great added value to the sport that increases the responsibilities and demands on her successor. Triathlon today enjoys universal recognition in the global sporting world and in the IOC and this recognition is linked to Marisol Casado’s presidency and administration of the WT. The presentations were very interesting and the candidates developed the main points of their programme before the National Federations members of the ET.
The presentation of the candidate for the presidency and current Secretary General of the WT, Antonio Arimany, stood out. In addition to presenting a broad programme focused on the support of the National Federations, the development of the whole process had a very reinforcing character for his candidacy. Two candidates, Antonio Alvarez – from Mexico – and Shin Otsuka – from Japan – announced at the conference that they are withdrawing from the race for the presidency and will support the Spanish candidate Arimany. This gives a big advantage to the current WT Secretary General. The candidate presentations concluded with the presentation of the positions of Michelle Cooper (Australia), Mads Freund (Denmark), Ian Howard (Great Britain), Dr. Debbie Alexander (RSA) and Mr. Tamas Toth (HUN)
The race is gaining new interest and the battle is focused on Europe, where three candidates are still in the running. The overall picture of the whole process was absolutely positive and the initiative of ET President Bertrandi to invite all candidates to address the members of the ET General Assembly was an absolutely positive and democratic process that was welcomed by all.
The election of the new World Triathlon President will take place in Spain on 21 October and we are already in the countdown.
