Thomas Bach, outgoing president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has expressed his confidence in the relationship with elected president Donald Trump, particularly regarding the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. During a press conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, Bach emphasized that previous experience with Trump concerning international sporting events reinforces his optimism about the president’s support for this Olympic event.

Additionally, Bach pointed out that despite recent wildfires in California and political tensions fueling speculation, preparations for the Games are proceeding without setbacks. These statements align with efforts from the organizing committee and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to ensure collaboration with the new administration, including key issues such as security and logistics for delegations from around the world.

TRUMP’S SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL SPORT

Thomas Bach recalled that Donald Trump: “played a significant role during the campaigns to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.” According to the IOC leader, Trump has shown continued commitment to these events and has repeatedly expressed his support, even during times of political controversy.

Despite criticism of his policies and his tense relationship with some states and co-hosting countries for the World Cup, Trump recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Games during a meeting with Casey Wasserman, president of the organizing committee. According to Bach, this backing is crucial for the success of the event, which requires not only private funding but also federal government support for key aspects like security and visa management for international delegations.

These statements reflect the IOC’s confidence that, despite challenges, the Trump administration will work closely with sports authorities to ensure the success of both global events.
