The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has opened a new chapter in its history with the election of Brazilian Fabio Azevedo as president during the 39th World Congress. Azevedo, elected unanimously, assumes leadership with the full backing of the international volleyball community and an ambitious strategic plan that will mark the next eight years of the organization to continue its growth and evolution.

With his 2024-2032 strategic vision, Azevedo seeks to continue the legacy of his predecessor, Dr. Ary S. Graça F°, consolidating the progress made in recent decades and enhancing the sport’s global impact. “I am honored and grateful for this opportunity to serve the Global Volleyball Movement,” said the new president.

A STRATEGIC VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Fabio Azevedo’s strategic plan has as its motto “Together as One” and focuses on key pillars: professionalization, integration, empowerment and mass participation. Among his most ambitious goals is to double the global fan base, which currently stands at 800 million.

To achieve this, Azevedo aims to expand global participation, both players and fans, and implement far-reaching initiatives that raise the standards of professional volleyball. “We have a solid foundation and a unique opportunity to guide volleyball into its next phase of development,” Azevedo added during his inaugural address.

HUGH MCCUTCHEON, SECRETARY GENERAL

A highlight of this leadership change is the appointment of Hugh McCutcheon as FIVB secretary general. McCutcheon, known for leading the USA men’s volleyball team to gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the women’s team to silver at London 2012, assumes this role with a strong track record as a player, coach and sports administrator.

“It is an honor and a thrill to take on this new role,” McCutcheon expressed. His extensive experience will be key to supporting Azevedo’s strategic vision and strengthening the FIVB’s impact on the global sporting landscape.

GLOBAL MOMENTUM FOR VOLLEYBALL

With this new leadership, the FIVB aims to consolidate itself as a benchmark in world sport, positioning volleyball as one of the most inclusive, accessible and exciting sports. Azevedo and his team pledge to work in partnership with national federations and fans to ensure that the coming years are marked by innovation, growth and excellence in every aspect of the game.

World volleyball is entering a promising era, led by a unified vision and an unwavering commitment to its global community. As Azevedo emphasized, “The future of volleyball depends on our ability to work together, and I am ready to lead this exciting journey.”
