During its 236th meeting, held on December 3 and 4 in Monaco, the World Athletics Council took a decisive step by committing to take action against gender violence. This decision highlights an issue that has gained significant relevance worldwide, especially following recent cases affecting the sports world. In a context of increasing awareness and action, this initiative also aims to strengthen protection policies within athletics, promoting education and social change.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe emphasized the importance of this commitment, highlighting the fundamental role of athletes in the fight against gender violence. He also stressed that the decisions made are not only aimed at improving safety and well-being within the sporting environment but also at exerting a positive influence on society in general.
AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE
In collaboration with the Athletes’ Commission and the Gender Leadership Working Group, the World Athletics Council has identified the fight against gender violence as one of its main priorities. With the aim of expanding protection measures in sports, this campaign seeks to address a global issue that affects millions of women. According to recent data, one in three women experiences violence at some point in their lives, and recent cases in Africa have raised great concern within the international sports community.
The Athletes’ Commission, composed of 18 members from different countries and regions, has expressed its strong commitment to the cause. While acknowledging the limitations of sports organizations in implementing policies outside their jurisdiction, they are convinced that World Athletics can make a significant impact through three key areas: awareness, education, and lobbying. In this regard, Coe emphasized the importance of active athlete involvement, as they are in a unique position to drive change through their visibility and leadership.
