Milano Cortina 2026 is acting as an accelerator of the regional economy in northern Italy. In a territory marked by depopulation, climate pressure on seasonal tourism and connectivity deficits, the Olympic event is helping to unlock investment and strengthen strategic sectors. The approach focuses on reinforcing sustainable local economies, leveraging already established sports infrastructure and adapting planning to the real needs of host communities.
In Milan, the 2030 Urban Development Plan has gained momentum with investments in public transport, social housing and community infrastructure. The Olympic Village, built on a former railway site, will be transformed after the Games into Italy’s largest student accommodation complex, meeting a structural demand in the city. In addition, the Municipality and the transport operator have accelerated the removal of architectural barriers across the metro network, which before the Olympic designation had only two fully accessible lines.
Mountain areas, healthcare and connectivity
In Lombardy and Veneto, the Olympic momentum supports investment in smart energy, sustainable mobility and healthcare modernisation. The Livigno Health Centre, Codivilla Hospital in Cortina and San Martino Hospital in Belluno are being upgraded with the aim of ensuring high-level medical services in the Upper Valtellina region.
At the same time, the modernisation of railway stations in Trento and Bolzano is strengthening connectivity and accessibility, helping to make life in mountain areas more viable throughout the year.
Impact 2026 and business effect
The Impact 2026 programme has awarded more than EUR 1.77 million through 76 contracts to social enterprises and local micro-companies, facilitating access to opportunities, training and collaborative networks. More than 400 companies have taken part in capacity-building initiatives linked to sustainable procurement and innovation.
According to estimates by Bocconi and Ca’ Foscari Universities, the Olympic Games will generate more than EUR 5 billion in net economic impact and 36,000 jobs in Italy. A Visa-Ipsos survey indicates that 64 per cent of SMEs expect a positive impact on their business and 95 per cent anticipate benefits for the local economy and tourism, reflecting how the Olympic momentum is already strengthening the regional economic fabric.
