The world of esports is constantly evolving, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is looking to adapt to new trends. Last July, during the IOC Session in Paris, the creation of the Esports Olympic Games was approved— a bold move to integrate the virtual world into the Olympic spirit. Initially scheduled for 2025, the first edition of these Games has been postponed, marking a strategic adjustment in its implementation.
This Tuesday, the IOC announced that the inaugural edition of the Esports Olympic Games will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027. This date change, two years later than originally planned, highlights the complexity of merging traditional sports cultures with esports, ensuring that the new competition aligns with Olympic values and the expectations of the gaming community.
ROAD TO RIYADH 2027
Although the Games will take place in 2027, the road to Riyadh will begin earlier. The IOC has confirmed that the first qualifying competitions will be held this year, allowing esports athletes from around the world to compete for a spot in this historic event. The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) will play a crucial role as an IOC partner, contributing its expertise in game selection, tournament structure, and the innovation needed for the development of the Games.
This postponement will allow better adaptation of esports to Olympic principles. Key issues such as the formation of national teams, negotiations with video game publishers, the implementation of an anti-doping program, and the integrity control of competitions are essential to ensuring the success and credibility of the Esports Olympic Games.
