The International Olympic Academy has opened a new Weightlifting Room at its premises in Ancient Olympia, expanding its sports facilities for athletes and participants attending the Academy’s international educational programmes.
The new facility features a state-of-the-art ELEIKO weightlifting platform and a full set of weights, donated by the European Weightlifting Federation and its official sponsor, ELEIKO.
The inauguration was attended by IOA President Dr Charilaos Tsolakis and EWF President Dr Astrit Hasani, along with IOA Premises Manager Vaggelis Friggis.
The new Weightlifting Room is designed to strengthen the connection between sport, education and Olympic values. It will be available to participants in IOA programmes as well as weightlifters from Europe and around the world visiting Olympia.
Speaking at the inauguration, Tsolakis thanked the EWF and ELEIKO for the donation, saying the new facility would reinforce the Academy’s mission of connecting sport with education and Olympic values at the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
“Ancient Olympia is a unique meeting point for athletes, students and future leaders from around the world,” Tsolakis said. “Through this facility, participants in our programmes and weightlifters visiting Olympia will have the opportunity not only to train at a high level but also to experience the educational and cultural dimensions of Olympism.”
Dr Hasani also described the inauguration as a proud moment for the EWF and ELEIKO
“A proud moment for the European Weightlifting Federation, together with our sponsor ELEIKO, to inaugurate the new Weightlifting Room at the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia and donate an Eleiko weightlifting set and platform,” Hasani told SportsIn.
“Now, weightlifters from Europe and around the world visiting Olympia can train while learning and exchanging knowledge in the birthplace of the Olympic Games.”
Hasani added that the EWF intends to further strengthen its cooperation with the IOA, including through seminars for EWF administrators in Ancient Olympia.
The new facility forms part of the IOA’s continuing expansion of its infrastructure and educational programmes, bringing together sport, culture and education in the historic setting of Ancient Olympia.
