The International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted the sanction that Guatemala had been carrying since August 2022. With this resolution effective “until further notice”, Guatemalan athletes will be able to use the anthem, flag and name of their country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games .

At the time, the IOC sanctioned the country for alleged government intervention in the Guatemalan Olympic Committee within the country’s political disputes and as a consequence of the Guatemalan Constitutional Court suspending articles of the COG’s operating statutes.

IN SANTIAGO 2023 THEY WERE INDEPENDENT ATHLETES

The decision to provisionally lift the sanction will return Guatemala’s patriotic emblems to major sporting events after the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, where athletes competed as Independent Athletes, a situation in which Russian athletes currently find themselves.

So far there are 10 COG qualifiers for Paris 2024. Andrés Fernández and Sophia Hernández (Modern Pentathlon), José Barrondo (Walking), Juan Maegli (Sailing), Luis Grijalva (Athletics, 5,000 meters), Alberto González (Marathon) and Sebastián Bermúdez, Adriana Ruano, Jean Pierre Brol and Waleska Soto (Tiro) will be at the rings event.
