The National Athletics Championship in Perth became the stage for a historic milestone in Australian youth athletics. Sprinter Leah O’Brien, just 17 years old, broke the record for the under-18 women’s 100 meters previously held since 1968 by the legendary Raelene Boyle, with a time of 11.14 seconds. The mark, set during the Mexico Olympic Games 57 years ago, seemed untouchable until O’Brien crossed the finish line in a performance that surprised even the athlete herself.

This achievement not only marks the revival of sprinting in Australia, but also positions O’Brien as one of the top prospects ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. “I was hoping maybe for 11.3 in the final, but I’m really happy because I’ve been working very hard for this,” said the high school student, who had already won the national under-18 title in the 200 meters the previous Saturday in front of her family and friends.

A new generation of sprinters

Leah O’Brien’s time ranks as the ninth-fastest ever globally in the under-18 category and fourth on the all-time Australian list. Her performance, on par with athletes like Torrie Lewis —current national record holder with 11.10 seconds— is a sign of the emerging talent that is transforming Australian athletics. Alongside O’Brien, names like Gout Gout —who broke Peter Norman’s national 200-meter record— and Lachie Kennedy —silver medalist in the 60m at the World Indoor Championships— complete a cohort that is already making headlines.

O’Brien, who deeply admires stars like Lewis and Bree Masters, will compete this Friday in the open 100 meters against some of the country’s top sprinters. Her breakthrough reflects a generation hungry for glory, with eyes set on Brisbane 2032. “I think I’ve really made a name for myself and I hope to compete for the teams in the future,” she said after her feat. With performances like this, Australia seems to be planting the seeds of a new golden era in sprinting.
