Emmanuel Macron will ask Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Olympic Games that will take place in Paris between July 26 and August 11 of this year. The French president will try to comply with the United Nations decision to call for an Olympic truce during the Games.

The head of France, in an interview given to Ukrainian television this Monday, said: “As is traditional in the countries where the Olympic Games are held, France will comply with the decision of the United Nations, of November 2023, when 120 States members of the organization unanimously approved an Olympic truce.”

“The truce project, next summer, is a message of peace”

Macron recalled that Putin refused to comply with the Olympic truce at the Beijing Games in winter 2022, months after the start of the attempted occupation of Ukraine. “The international community must evolve at the pace of the Olympic committee. The truce project, next summer, is a message of peace. At the same time, we must not forget that the future of Europe’s security depends on the freedom and independence of Ukraine, which we will always defend,” Macron assured.

For his part, Vladimir Putin has responded to this proposition by pointing out that he “does not” know anything about this proposal, although “we are willing to consider any issue, but we will always, in any situation, proceed in accordance with the interests of Russia.”
