Spain achieves its first team gold at the 2024 SUP and Paddleboard World Championship

Spain celebrated a historic victory at the ISA 2024 SUP and Paddleboard World Championship by winning its first team gold medal. The competition took place in Copenhagen, where the Spanish team shone on an exciting final day with the SUP Sprint Races. Alba Frey, representing Spain, and David Leão from Brazil were crowned world champions, capping off Spain’s impressive performance.

Frey was the star of the event’s final race, securing the victory that sealed her team’s triumph. Spain, which had previously won silver medals in the team category in the last three editions, joyfully celebrated its gold medal. Manuel Hoyuela, also from Spain, contributed a silver medal in the men’s category, bringing the total to 13 individual medals, along with a silver in the team relay race.

The women’s final in the Sprint race was one of the most competitive, featuring three medalists from the 2023 edition. Frey, who had not won in the previous event, outperformed world champion Mélanie Lafenetre (FRA) and experienced competitors Mariecarmen Rivera (PUR) and Cecilia Pampinella (ITA), demonstrating that her intensive training paid off.

Frey expressed her joy after the race, highlighting the hard work and sacrifice that led her to achieve this dream. The unity and collective effort of the Spanish team were key to their success. “We are like a family,” Frey remarked, emphasizing the camaraderie and dedication that brought them to the top of the championship.
