For many Olympic athletes, the culmination of their careers not only brings moments of glory but also an unexpected emotional challenge. The experience of competing in the Olympic Games, such as the recent Paris 2024, pushes athletes to their peak physical and mental performance. However, once the euphoria fades, many experience what is known as “post-Olympic depression,” a phase of emotional and physical decompression that can be difficult to manage.
Renowned athletes like Michael Phelps and Adam Peaty have openly discussed the impact that constant pressure has on their mental health. The process of preparing for the Games involves a delicate balance between striving for success and managing expectations, identity, and stress. This phenomenon is not uncommon, and recent studies show how many athletes face disappointment or a loss of purpose once the competition ends.

To help athletes navigate this complex stage, the International Olympic Committee, through its Athlete365 team, has organized a series of webinars titled “How to Keep the Momentum“. These sessions, scheduled for September 24 and 26, will provide tools and resources for athletes to find “post-Paris pathways” and move forward with their careers and lives after the Games.
What makes these webinars special is their comprehensive approach, as they will be available in six languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, and Russian) and will feature speakers sharing their own experiences. Additionally, participant interaction will be encouraged, fostering a supportive community among athletes.
With initiatives like this, the IOC continues to reinforce its commitment to supporting athletes beyond competition, helping them face not only the physical challenges but also the emotional struggles that come with elite sports.
