The future of triathlon is also shaped beyond the race courses. World Triathlon, led by President Antonio Arimany, held its XXXIX Congress on Wednesday in Sanxenxo, in the province of Pontevedra, with an agenda covering competitions, finances, elections and internal organisation. The meeting coincides with the World Championship Finals, which are taking place in Pontevedra until Sunday, 27 September.

The World Championships, World Cups and Triathlon World Tour are among the topics announced by the international federation. These are accompanied by financial reports and decisions on how the organisation operates. The elections are intended to fill two vacancies on the Legal and Constitution Committee and one seat reserved for a woman on the Technical Committee.

Fernando Molinero’s presence

Fernando Molinero, Director General of Sports at Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD), attended the entire Congress. His presence throughout deserves recognition as a sign of institutional commitment to triathlon and to the decisions that shape its development. Devoting time to these sessions gives substance to public support, providing an opportunity to understand the challenges first-hand, follow proposals and support the work of federations.

Holding the Congress alongside the Finals brings international administration and competition together in the same week. Pontevedra is hosting the world championship event again after the 2023 edition and the 2019 and 2025 Multisport World Championships. That continuity puts Spain in a position to contribute both to the organisation of major events and to discussions about the future of the sport.
