The 12th edition of the Zagreb Judo Grand Prix opened in spectacular fashion, with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and a host of distinguished officials in attendance. The ceremony showcased Croatia’s growing prominence in international judo and the city’s commitment to hosting world-class sporting events.
Joining the Prime Minister were Tonci Glavina, Minister of Tourism and Sport; Gordan Grlić Radman, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs; the Deputy Mayor of Zagreb; Dr. Sanda Čorak, President of the Croatian Judo Federation; and Olympic gold medalist Barbara Matić, Vice President of the Croatian Olympic Committee. Their presence highlighted the government’s strong support for the sport.
Speaking on behalf of IJF President Marius Vizer, IJF Head Sport Director Vladimir Barta welcomed the dignitaries, praising Zagreb’s consistency and success over twelve consecutive editions. “Zagreb has become a hub for international judo thanks to its experienced organizers and unwavering government support,” Barta said.

In a message published ahead of the event, IJF President Marius Vizer praised Zagreb’s accessibility, beauty, and rich history. He expressed confidence that the local organizing team would provide exemplary conditions for athletes and a warm welcome for all participants, reflecting the high standards the IJF has come to expect from the Croatian capital.
Judo has a special place in Croatian sport, highlighted by Barbara Matić’s historic achievement at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, where she claimed one of the country’s two gold medals. Dr Sanda Čorak also referenced this milestone during the ceremony, emphasizing the inspiration it provides to young athletes in Croatia.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was Prime Minister Plenković’s speech in which he welcomed athletes from across the globe. He said:
“Dear judoka, friends of judo, a warm welcome to Zagreb, to Croatia, and to the most important judo event on the calendar. I extend my thanks to Dr Sanda Čorak, Olympic champion Mrs Barbara Matić, our Deputy Mayor, and the Minister of Sport and Tourism for their support. The presence of 370 judoka from five continents is a testament to the success of this event and offers inspiration to young Croatians. Since its inception, the budget has increased sixfold, reflecting our commitment to supporting the Croatian Judo Federation and the sport of judo. I also thank all sponsors and contributors for making this event possible. The symbolism of judo is as important as the sport itself, which is why we are so proud to host it. I hereby declare the 2025 Zagreb Grand Prix officially open.”

This year, 370 athletes from 48 countries are competing in 14 categories, including both men’s and women’s divisions. The Grand Prix promises thrilling matches, high-level competition, and opportunities for young judoka to showcase their skills on the international stage.
The Zagreb Grand Prix has steadily grown in prestige, attracting athletes from around the world and strengthening Croatia’s position in the global judo community. With twelve successful editions, consistent government backing, and support from the Croatian Judo Federation, the event is regarded as one of Europe’s most important competitions on the IJF World Tour.
As the tournament progresses, Zagreb continues to demonstrate its ability to host world-class sporting events, offering athletes, officials, and fans alike an unforgettable experience.
