The International Federation of Muaythai Associations –IFMA-, the sole governing body for Muaythai recognized by the International Olympic Committee, awarded its highest honor, the Golden Mongkon, to IOC President Thomas Bach. This accolade was announced during the 2025 IFMA Senior World Championships held in Türkiye, in recognition of Bach’s exceptional contributions to the global sporting community and his unwavering support for Muaythai.
Since its provisional recognition by the IOC in 2016, IFMA has worked tirelessly to integrate Muaythai into the Olympic movement. This historic achievement was made possible through years of joint effort between national federations and the departments of the international federation, culminating in full recognition during the 138th IOC Session in Tokyo in 2021.
Thomas Bach’s support for Muaythai
Throughout his presidency, Thomas Bach has been a consistent advocate for the values and development of Muaythai. A notable moment of his support occurred during the 2016 Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam, where he attended the Muaythai competitions, demonstrating his personal appreciation for the sport’s cultural roots and competitive integrity.
Under Bach’s leadership, the Olympic movement has evolved toward greater inclusivity and unity, reflected in the historic update to the Olympic motto: “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together.” This approach has strengthened the relationship between the IOC and IFMA, solidifying Muaythai’s place in the global sports landscape.
The significance of the Golden Mongkon
The Golden Mongkon, a symbol of excellence, respect, unity, and leadership in Muaythai tradition, was awarded to Bach in recognition of his visionary leadership and dedication to sport. The global Muaythai community unanimously celebrated this honor, recognizing Bach not only as a champion of Olympic ideals but also as an honorary member of the IFMA family.
This accolade follows the IFMA Jubilee Medal, presented to Bach in 2023 to commemorate the federation’s 30th anniversary and celebrate the enduring partnership between IFMA and the Olympic movement.
On behalf of the entire IFMA World Family, profound gratitude and respect were expressed toward Thomas Bach for his exceptional service to sport and his steadfast support for Muaythai. IFMA continues to honor the recognition granted by the IOC and reaffirms its daily commitment to the values and principles of the Olympic Charter.
