The Olympic Games are a global event where thousands of people will gather throughout its duration. Paris 2024 faces numerous threats, and a study by Insikt Group from Recorded Future has identified several key risks.
In addition to athletes from over 200 countries, millions of spectators and extensive media coverage will need to be protected at all times. The investigation highlights the key threats for these Olympic Games.
ONLINE THREATS
Cybercriminals are expected to exploit the Olympic Games to launch cyberattacks on governments, hospitality, transportation, and healthcare. Common in such events are phishing scams targeting businesses and attendees.
Hacktivists might also attempt hacks to protest geopolitical conflicts, such as supporting Ukraine. Another significant issue to address is espionage operations that may intensify. “State actors may use Olympic-themed lures to gather intelligence and influence operations related to Russia, Iran, and Azerbaijan, amplifying critical narratives towards France, NATO, and Israel,” the report states.
PROTESTS AND TERRORIST THREATS
One of the major threats is almost certainly protests from activists, farmers, and union members who will seek to draw attention to their causes during the Olympic Games. However, the Insikt report notes that “these protests will mostly be peaceful.”
Another significant threat, observed at other major events, is terrorist threats. Terrorist groups will seek to disrupt competitions, but a substantial security presence is expected to mitigate the likelihood of impact.
Insikt Group’s warning coincides with French authorities’ announcements of thwarting at least two terrorist plots targeting the upcoming Games. In late April, French counterterrorism forces arrested a 16-year-old from Marignier who had posted on social media about his intention to build an explosive belt and carry out a suicide attack at an Olympic venue. Last week, French security officials arrested an 18-year-old accused of planning an attack inspired by ISIS at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne.
All eyes and media are focused on making sure that all this does not become an anecdote and does not tarnish any medal or Olympic achievement.
