The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has taken a significant step by joining the Global Esports Federation (GEF). This announcement marks a milestone for the IWF, as weightlifting now becomes part of the growing global esports community. The membership application was submitted at the end of July, and on August 1st, GEF President Chris Chan officially confirmed the IWF’s acceptance as a member.

The GEF, which promotes the development of esports worldwide, has 180 members across five continents. Its mission is to unite traditional sports, esports, and technology by organizing global events that celebrate the universality and growth of this discipline.

Chris Chan expressed his excitement about the IWF’s inclusion in the GEF family, highlighting the importance of this new alliance. “It is an honor to have the IWF as a member of the GEF,” he mentioned in his welcome letter. The inclusion of weightlifting in the world of esports represents an opportunity to explore new forms of participation and growth.

The IWF’s representation in the GEF’s International Federations Working Group will be led by José Quiñones, a member of the IWF Executive Committee and President of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation, along with Achilleas Tsogas, CEO of the IWF. Both will play a key role in discussions on how to effectively integrate weightlifting into the global esport ecosystem.

IWF President Mohammed Jalood emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that despite the 120 years of history the IWF will celebrate in 2025, the federation seeks to remain innovative and in tune with modern trends. Membership in the GEF is seen as a crucial platform for bringing weightlifting to new audiences and exploring the possibilities that technology offers in the sport’s evolution.
